چکیده

According to World Health Organization estimates, 16.7 million people die of cardiovascular diseases each year. By the year 2010, it is estimated that cardiovascular disease will become the leading cause of death in developing countries and by 2020 it will contribute to nearly 25 million deaths worldwide. Although therapies including drugs, lifestyle modification and revascularisation procedures have been demonstrated in clinical trials to be beneficial, they are under-utilised. Paradoxically, in spite of the under-use of evidence-based therapies, patients actively seek complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments. While many alternative therapies involve oral vitamin and mineral supplements that are unlikely to cause harm, chelation therapy is one of the most aggressive and intensive CAM modalities.

EDTA chelation therapy for cardiovascular disease: a systematic review

BACKGROUND Numerous practitioners of both conventional and complementary and alternative medicine throughout North America and Europe claim that chelation therapy with EDTA is an effective means to both control and treat cardiovascular disease. These claims are controversial, and several randomized controlled trials have been completed dealing with this topic. To address this issue we conducted...

Should EDTA chelation therapy be used instead of long-term clopidogrel plus aspirin to treat patients at risk from drug-eluting stents?

The recently discovered increased risk of blood clots, leading to myocardial infarction and sudden death beginning six months after medicated stents are implanted in patients following percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), has left cardiologists pondering what course of action to take. The purpose of adding implanted medication to a stent is to prevent thrombin accumulation and...

Acute prooxidant effects of vitamin C in EDTA chelation therapy and long-term antioxidant benefits of therapy.

Chelation therapy is thought to not only remove contaminating metals but also to decrease free radical production. EDTA chelation therapy, containing high doses of vitamin C as an antioxidant, is often used in the treatment of diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases but the effectiveness of this treatment may be variable and its efficacy has not been demonstrated conclusively. The...

The effect of an EDTA-based chelation regimen on patients with diabetes mellitus and prior myocardial infarction in the Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT).

BACKGROUND The Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT) showed clinical benefit of an EDTA-based infusion regimen in patients aged ≥50 years with prior myocardial infarction. Diabetes mellitus before enrollment was a prespecified subgroup. METHODS AND RESULTS Patients received 40 infusions of EDTA chelation or placebo. A total of 633 (37%) patients had diabetes mellitus (322 EDTA and 311 plac...

EDTA chelation therapy, without added vitamin C, decreases oxidative DNA damage and lipid peroxidation.

Chelation therapy is thought to not only remove contaminating metals but also to decrease free radical production. However, in standard ethylene diamine tetracetic acid (EDTA) chelation therapy, high doses of vitamin C with potential pro-oxidant effects are often added to the chelation solution. The authors demonstrated previously that the intravenous administration of the standard chelation co...
